Dequanda L.
Born and raised in Michigan, she faced the challenges of her parents' divorce at a young age, stepping in to help raise her two younger siblings while her mother worked tirelessly. Even as a teenager, Dequanda’s strong work ethic shone through—she began working for the Lansing School District as a childcare teacher while balancing a second job at McDonald’s. After graduating, she took on a role as a substitute teacher before moving to Tennessee in 1993 to work for the Maury County School District.
In 1996, Dequanda opened her home to children in need by becoming a foster parent, a role she embraced until 2011.
Her passion for helping others extended beyond her career, as she pursued higher education in nursing while managing the responsibilities of raising her family. Although life’s demands led her to pause her studies, Dequanda remains determined to complete her nursing degree in the future.
Dequanda has three children and a two-year-old grandson, Jayvieon, who has lived with her since he was an infant. Her son, Karsten, is a high school senior and aspiring HVAC technician who enjoys playing rugby and spending time with family and friends. Her daughter, Celia, is a creative 12-year-old with a love for music, horror movies, and making TikTok videos. Jayvieon, who will soon turn three, loves being active, playing at SkyZone, and helping his grandmother around the house.
For Dequanda, having a stable and safe home is a dream come true and a testament to her resilience and faith. “I’ve had so many no’s. My mom always said to keep praying and don’t stop trying because a door will open up for you. This means the world to us. Thank you so much for helping people like me, believing in me, and giving us a chance,” Dequanda shared.
She is immensely grateful to Habitat for Humanity and the sponsors who have helped make this dream a reality. A permanent home means a solid foundation for her children and grandson, providing a place where they can grow, thrive, and create lasting memories together.
